Work based learning opportunities
On-the-job learning links academic study with meaningful workplace experience. For adult learners, it is a chance to apply existing strengths, build new skills, and move forward in their careers. When colleges offer these opportunities, they create clear connections between coursework and career outcomes. This increases persistence, completion, and long-term success.
This type of learning can take many forms. Internships, apprenticeships, cooperative education, project-based learning, and employer-sponsored training all allow adults to work, earn credit, and advance professionally at the same time.
The Center provides technical assistance, professional development, and innovation funding to help colleges design and expand these models. We encourage institutions to work with employers and community partners to align programs with Michigan’s workforce needs.
Many adults balance education with work and family commitments. Paid, credit-bearing opportunities can reduce barriers and keep students on track to completion.
